Overview

The Great Pyramid of Giza, located near Cairo, Egypt, is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza pyramid complex. Constructed over 4,500 years ago during the Old Kingdom’s Fourth Dynasty, it remains a significant representation of Egyptian civilization and human creativity. The pyramid, built as a tomb for Pharaoh Khufu, was the tallest man-made structure in the world before the Lincoln Cathedral spire in England. Its enormous size and precise engineering, mainly made of limestone blocks, required advanced geometry, mathematics, and engineering methods. The sides of the pyramid nearly line up with the compass’s cardinal points due to the precision of the stone cutting and arrangement. Despite centuries of research and exploration, many aspects of the pyramid’s construction and purpose remain unknown. Archaeologists and historians are fascinated by its internal chambers, including the Grand Gallery and the King’s Chamber, which provide insights into ancient Egyptian customs and beliefs. Today, the Great Pyramid of Giza is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Egypt’s most popular tourist destinations.
